What Makes a School Asthma Friendly?

  • A school is more asthma friendly when all staff work together to provide a safe and healthy school environment to reduce asthma triggers throughout the school.
  • A school is more asthma friendly when there are statewide policies in place that help children with asthma breathe easier in school. New Jersey has several laws. Click here to read about the laws

Who receives the PACNJ Asthma Friendly School Award?

New Jersey schools, public and private, that complete the following PACNJ Six Steps to Success:

  • School nurses complete the PACNJ training on asthma management: Asthma Basics for School Nurses
  • School personnel participate in the PACNJ faculty in-service training  Asthma Management in the Classroom: What Teachers Need to Know
  • School nurses complete the PACNJ training on the PACNJ Asthma treatment Plan: Asthma Treatment Plan: School Nurses Leading the Way
  • District/Private school participates PACNJ - NJDHSS/PEOSH Designated Persons training on indoor air quality and sets up an indoor air quality team in each school
  • District /Private school takes the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection "No Idling Pledge" to stop school buses from idling when they drop off and pick up students
  • Each school has a nebulizer

Since 2001 The Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey, sponsored by the American Lung Association of New Jersey, has been awarded grants from the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, with funds provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under the current Co-operative Agreement 5U59EH000206-2. Additional funding has been provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency under the current Agreements XA97256707-1, XA98284401-4 and XA97250908-0; and through the Health Resources and Services Administration via Mount Sinai School of Medicine. These state and federal grants total $1,396,376 and represent 93% of the total amount of grants received to date in support of the Coalition. The remaining 7% of funding for the PACNJ was provided by corporate grants in the amount of $93,500. (October 2008) Sponsored by
