The
Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey
The American Lung
Association of New Jersey and the New Jersey Thoracic Society have
initiated the formation of The Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New
Jersey (PACNJ) to act as a statewide clearinghouse for asthma programs and services. With members on six task
forces, PACNJ is working with schools, child care providers, physicians,
nurses, health
insurers, community groups and environmental agencies to reach all
individuals in
New Jersey with the most effective methods for
managing their asthma. The Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition
of New Jersey’s task forces are focused on achieving the
following goals:

and Child Care Task Forces: |
Work
to ensure that all public and private education and child
care in New Jersey will understand and cooperate with the
National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Guidelines
in partnership of care for managing asthma. |

Evaluation Task
Force: |
Programs and interventions will be evidenced - based and their
evaluation data driven |
| Community
Task Force: |
Works
to ensure that all caregivers and children will understand
and apply the NHLBI Guidelines for managing asthma as
educated consumers. |

Quality Care
Task Force: |
Works
to ensure New Jersey primary care physicians and members in
the health care professions will diagnose and treat asthma
based on best practices according to the National Heart, Lung
and blood Institute (NHLBI) Guidelines for managing
asthma, and NJ health insurance plans will offer coverage to
support best practice and referral to specialty care |

Task Force: |
Works
to promote good indoor and outdoor air quality to improve
the quality of life of children with asthma as is
recommended by the NHLBI Guidelines. |

The
American Lung Association of New Jersey
(ALANJ) is dedicated to the prevention of
lung disease and the promotion of lung health.
Founded in 1906, it is the state’s first voluntary
health organization. Originally founded to combat
tuberculosis, the Association achieves their goals
through education, research and advocacy; with an
emphasis on asthma, tobacco and the environment. |
The New Jersey Thoracic Society
(NJTS) is the medical section of the
ALANJ. The Society seeks to further
the scientific interest in research to
aid in the successful diagnosis, treatment
and prevention of lung disease. |

Since 2001 The
Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey,
sponsored by the American Lung Association of New Jersey
has been awarded grants from the New Jersey Department
of Health and Senior Services, with funds provided by
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
under operative Agreement U59/CCU217776 in the total
amount of $706,435. Additional funding has been
provided by the United State Environmental Protection
Agency under Agreements XA98284401-1 and XA98255101-2 in
the total amount of $180,400; and through the Health
Resources and Services Administration via Mount Sinai
School of Medicine in the total amount of $20,000.
These state and federal grants represent 93.% of the
total amount of grants received to date in support of
the Coalition. The remaining 6.3% of funding for
the PACNJ was provided by corporate grant totaling
$63,000 and a foundation grant for 28,000.
